TECHNOTE
How does Crystal Ball store data in
Excel?
Crystal Ball stores data in Excel in Named Ranges. To
see the data, select Insert > Name > Define. The Define Name dialog
appears. Each Crystal Ball name has three parts:
name type
Letters indicating the type of data, such as
A=assumption, C=correlation, D=decision variable, F=forecast,
and T=time (All Crystal Ball record names begin with Z).
index number
The first index for each name type is 100 (e.g.,
ZA100, ZC100). Indices increment for each new record of that type.
Sub-index number
If an assumption uses a custom distribution,
Crystal Ball creates an additional assumption data record for
the custom distribution information. The first custom distribution
for any assumption is AA.
Names
Each record type holds a different kind of Crystal
Ball data. When you select a record name, the actual data in the named
range appears in the Refers To field. Parameters are separated by
plus signs.
Name
Description and parameters
ZA0
Crystal Ball version data.
ZA0A
Number of assumptions and the index of the
last assumption.
ZA0C
Number of correlations and the index of the
last correlation.
ZA0D
Number of decision variables and the index
of the last decision variable.
ZA0F
Number of forecasts and the index of the
last forecast.
ZA0T
Time stamp information for the last saved
version of the data.
ZA XXX
A single assumption, where
XXX is the assumption index. Parameters list the cell reference,
the name of the assumption (with a first character that indicates
the assumption distribution), and then other description information.
ZA XXXAA
An additional assumption data record for
custom distribution information. XXX
is the index of the assumption the data is associated with.
AA is the data record number.
ZC XXX
A single correlation.
XXX is the correlation index. Parameters list the cell
references of the correlated assumptions and the correlation
coefficients.
ZF XXX
A single forecast, where
XXX is the forecast index. Parameters list the cell reference,
the name, units, and then other description information.
ZD XXX
A single decision variable, where
XXX is the decision variable index. Parameters list the
cell reference, the name, and then other description information.
