TECHNOTE

Why does Excel sometimes crash when I quit or close a spreadsheet (prior to version 4.0c)?

Problem

Excel crashes on some computers when you quit or close a spreadsheet. This particular crash is usually proceeded by dialog boxes that are missing buttons.

Cause

This is caused by a buggy Windows system file, CTL3DV2.DLL, found in the Windows\System folder.

Workaround

To work around this problem, obtain a copy of Crystal Ball Version 4.0c or later. This version installs an older version of CTL3DV2.DLL in the Crystal Ball folder, and Crystal Ball uses that file instead of the one in the Windows\System folder.
